The catalogue covers every preserved British locomotive on record, more than 250 individual engines spread across heritage railways, working depots, mainline support fleets, and museum collections in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The bulk are steam, reflecting where the British preservation movement put its energy from the 1960s onwards, but the listing extends to the diesel and electric classes saved as the preservation effort has expanded into the post-steam era. Each entry tracks one specific physical machine: its running number, the name it carries (where applicable), the class to which it belongs, the original ordering railway, the date it was withdrawn from service, who owns or custodians it now, where it is currently based, and whether it is in working order, awaiting overhaul, undergoing restoration, stored, or held as a static exhibit.
Where to see preserved British locomotives
Preserved locomotives in Britain fall broadly into three groups, and the catalogue lets you find each of them. The first group is the working fleet on the heritage railways: engines that are passed by the boiler inspectors, kept in steam, and rostered to run public passenger services for the operating year. Around half the surviving British locomotives are in this category at any given moment, although the numbers shift constantly as boilers come up for their ten-year overhauls and engines move in and out of traffic. To see a working preserved engine, the most reliable approach is to pick a heritage railway near you on the preservation railways and museums page, then look at the engines listed as currently based at that line.
The second group is the mainline support fleet: the relatively small number of preserved engines certified for use on the national network, which appear on charter trains run by tour operators including the Railway Touring Company, Steam Dreams, the Railway Performance Society, and the Locomotive Services group. Examples include Flying Scotsman , Tornado , Clan Line , Sir Nigel Gresley , and King George V . These engines work named excursions on the national rail network, often over routes their classes ran in regular service. The catalogue notes which locomotives currently hold a mainline certificate.
The third group is the museum collection: engines preserved as static exhibits because of their historical significance, their condition, or both. The National Railway Museum at York holds the largest collection, including Mallard , the rebuilt streamlined Duchess of Hamilton , and significant pre-Grouping engines that no longer run. Its sister site, the Locomotion museum at Shildon , holds the rest of the national collection, often in working condition or with engines visiting from heritage railways. The Science Museum in London has Stephenson's Rocket on permanent display, and a network of regional museums fills out the picture, including the Riverside Museum in Glasgow , the Head of Steam museum at Darlington , and the STEAM museum at Swindon .
The Barry effect and where the survivors came from
The story of how so many British locomotives were saved from the cutter's torch is inseparable from a single scrapyard at Barry Island in South Wales. When British Railways ended steam in August 1968, several hundred withdrawn engines were sold to Woodham Brothers at Barry. Faced with a steady supply of cheaper scrap from elsewhere, mostly from redundant goods wagons, Dai Woodham did not bother to cut up most of the locomotives. They sat in the salt air of the Bristol Channel for a decade or more, and as the heritage railway movement gathered momentum during the 1970s and 1980s, the Barry hulks became the raw material for a wave of restoration projects. Engines that should have been scrap iron in 1969 are now in steam, decades later, on lines like the Severn Valley, the West Somerset, the Bluebell, the North Yorkshire Moors, and the Mid-Hants. Without Woodham's, the British preservation movement would be a fraction of its present size and entire classes, including the GWR Manors, the SR Battle of Britain Pacifics, and several BR Standard types, would have no surviving examples at all.
New-build locomotives
The British preservation scene now extends into new construction. The most famous example is Tornado , completed in 2008 by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, an LNER Peppercorn A1 Pacific built to the original 1948 Doncaster drawings to fill the gap that complete withdrawal had left in the surviving Pacific stock. Other new-build projects in various stages of construction include Beachy Head , an LBSCR Atlantic; Betton Grange , a GWR 6800 Grange Class; the LMS Patriot 5551 The Unknown Warrior; and Brunel's pioneering broad-gauge engine "Iron Duke" for the National Railway Museum. Several other groups are at the planning or fundraising stage on classes that disappeared without preservation, including the GWR County, the BR Class 6 Clan, and the Brighton J Class. The catalogue lists each of these projects in the same way as a survivor.
Find a specific engine, or a class
Use the filters below to narrow the list by class, current operating status (running, awaiting overhaul, undergoing restoration, static, new build), gauge, current location, or original railway company. To trace the design history of a particular type of engine rather than a single locomotive, follow the cross-reference from any preserved engine into its parent class , where the full design and operating history is set out. From a class entry you can then find every other surviving member, the chief mechanical engineer who designed the type, and the workshops that built the engines.
