New build, but around a genuine period boiler. The project became possible in 1986 when an ex-Great Northern Railway Atlantic boiler was found in a factory in Essex in excellent condition. Marsh had been Ivatt’s chief assistant on the GNR and drew the H2 closely on the GNR Class C1, so the boilers are near-identical; an ex-LB&SCR B4 tender chassis was also used. The locomotive entered service on the Bluebell Railway on 18 August 2024 after 24 years’ work, and is the only operational standard gauge Atlantic in the world.
