British Steam Train Picture Gallery

Welcome to our picture gallery of British steam locomotives — a growing collection of photographs capturing the engines, the railways and the atmosphere of the steam age, both as it was and as it survives today.

The images below feature preserved locomotives at work on Britain's heritage railways, mainline steam charters running on the national network, and the great named engines that have been saved for future generations. About the British steam locomotive

For more than a century the steam locomotive was the workhorse of the British railway network, hauling everything from express passenger trains and holiday specials to coal, freight and the daily post. When British Railways ran its last steam-hauled service in August 1968, it brought to a close an era that had begun with Richard Trevithick's pioneering experiments in 1804. What followed was one of the most remarkable preservation movements in the world: hundreds of engines rescued from the scrapyard, restored by volunteers, and returned to steam.

What you'll find in this gallery

The photographs here document that living heritage — the locomotives, the lines they run on, and the people who keep them going. To explore further:

  • Preserved locomotives — an individual entry for every surviving British steam engine, with its history, current location and operating status.
  • Heritage railways and museums — the 98 preserved lines and museums across the British Isles where you can see and ride behind steam.
  • Mainline steam charters — upcoming steam excursions running on the national network, searchable by location.
  • Locomotive classes — the engineering reference behind the engines, covering more than 550 British classes.
