2857, GWR 2800 Class (Severn Valley Railway)
Built 1918 at Swindon, a preserved GWR 2800 Class locomotive built in 1909. Withdrawn from British Railways service in 1963. Rescued from Woodham Brothers' scrapyard at Barry, South Wales and acquired for preservation in 1968.
2857 was built at Swindon in 1918 as part of the original Churchward 2800 series, the foundational British heavy freight 2-8-0 design. Acquired by the SVR in 1968 from Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry, the engine was restored to working order and has been a long-serving SVR resident.
The GWR 2800 Class was the first British 2-8-0, the wheel arrangement that subsequently became the British heavy freight standard.
Last recorded as based at the Severn Valley Railway. Operating status: Heritage railway service. Current livery: GWR plain black.
