35009 Shaw Savill, SR Merchant Navy Class
A preserved SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 Pacific, built at Eastleigh Works in June 1942 as SR No. 21C9. One of a batch whose air-smoothed casings were made of asbestos board. Withdrawn from British Railways service in 1966. One of the last twenty locomotives to leave Woodham Brothers' scrapyard at Barry, South Wales, departing in 1989.
35009 Shaw Savill was briefly part of a failed Brighton Railway Museum project before passing through the Mid-Hants Railway to Ian Riley Engineering at Heywood, where a major restoration to main-line standard is in progress.

35009 Shaw Savill was built at Eastleigh Works in June 1942 as SR No. 21C9, one of a batch of eight Merchant Navys whose air-smoothed casings were made of asbestos board rather than the standard sheet steel. One of the last twenty locomotives to leave Barry — departing in 1989 — after which it was part of a failed Brighton Railway Museum project at the Pullman works at Preston Park. Subsequently moved to the Mid-Hants Railway, then purchased by Ian Riley in 2003 and taken to his Heywood workshops where a long-term restoration to main-line standard is underway, reportedly to an ambitious Super Merchant conversion.
