Crewe Heritage Centre
The Crewe Heritage Centre is a railway museum and demonstration line on land originally part of Crewe Works, the former LNWR / LMS locomotive works. The Centre opened in 1987 as part of the celebrations of Crewe's 150th anniversary as a railway town, and occupies a triangular site between the Network Rail main line and the goods avoiding lines south of Crewe station.
The Centre's most famous exhibits are the surviving sections of the BR Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train (Prototype), which were displayed here after being withdrawn in the 1980s; the APT-P Driving Trailer and Power Cars are the principal preserved evidence of the controversial tilting train project.
Other exhibits include preserved LMS, BR, and industrial locomotives, signalling exhibits, the operational Crewe North Junction signal box, and a substantial collection of Crewe-built engineering. A short demonstration line runs through the site at events.
History
The Centre was established in 1987 as the "Crewe Railway Age" attraction to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Crewe as a railway town. Initial exhibits included LMS Princess Coronation 6229 Duchess of Hamilton (subsequently returned to the National Collection), several other preserved engines on loan, and the just-withdrawn APT-P sets.
The Centre has had a difficult financial history but has continued operating, and has retained the APT-P sets, now a unique surviving example of a major British passenger train development project.
Original line history
The site is on land formerly belonging to Crewe Works and to the goods avoiding lines south of Crewe station, all developed from 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway and its LNWR successor.
Stations and infrastructure
The site includes a museum hall, several outdoor display tracks, the operational Crewe North Junction signal box (relocated and rebuilt here), and a short demonstration line. There is a viewing platform overlooking the Network Rail main line.
