35029 Ellerman Lines, SR Merchant Navy Class
A preserved SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 Pacific, built at Eastleigh Works in 1949. Withdrawn from British Railways service in 1966 and preserved as part of the National Collection.
35029 Ellerman Lines is displayed at the National Railway Museum, York in sectioned (longitudinally cut) form, exposing its internal workings as a teaching exhibit — the only Merchant Navy preserved in this condition, and an invaluable display of the Bulleid Pacific's complex engineering including the chain-driven valve gear in its oil bath enclosure and the all-welded boiler construction. Sectioning means it cannot be returned to working order.
Last recorded as at the National Railway Museum, York, owned by the National Railway Museum. Operating status: Static display (sectioned). Current livery: BR Brunswick green.

35029 Ellerman Lines is preserved at the National Railway Museum, York in sectioned form — cut longitudinally to display the internal working of the Bulleid Pacific in cross-section, making it a unique teaching exhibit and the only Merchant Navy preserved in this way. The sectioning means it cannot be returned to working order, but provides an unparalleled view of the Bulleid design's internal complexity: the chain-driven valve gear in its enclosed oil bath, the all-welded boiler, and the original air-smoothed exterior casing. Withdrawn from BR service in 1966, it came to the NRM as part of the national collection.
