The Caledonian Railway 439 Class was a series of 0-4-4 side-tank locomotives designed by John F. McIntosh, Locomotive Superintendent of the Caledonian Railway from 1895 to 1914, and built at St Rollox Works, Glasgow, from 1900 as the Caledonian's standard suburban and branch passenger tank engine. The 439 Class became the most numerous of all Caledonian Railway tank types, with 92 examples built over several batches, and gave exceptionally long service on Scottish suburban and branch passenger duties, surviving in some cases into the 1960s under British Railways.

McIntosh designed the 439 Class as a practical and economical suburban tank to replace the ageing miscellany of older tank types that the Caledonian had accumulated, applying his characteristic clean design approach and the well-tried 0-4-4T wheel arrangement that had become standard for Scottish suburban working. The class worked the intensive suburban services around Glasgow — where the Caledonian's routes competed with the rival Glasgow and South Western Railway for the prosperous commuter traffic of the growing city — and the secondary and branch passenger services throughout the Caledonian's extensive Scottish network from the Border counties to Perth and the Highland edges.

After the 1923 Grouping the 439 Class passed to the London Midland and Scottish Railway, which continued them on Scottish suburban and branch duties as they were well suited to the work. British Railways inherited the survivors and many worked into the late 1950s and early 1960s. One example, No. 419, is preserved at the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway in Falkirk, Scotland, in Caledonian Railway blue livery.
