NER J21 0-6-0
The NER J21 Class was a fleet of around 201 0-6-0 mixed-traffic and goods steam locomotives designed by Wilson Worsdell for the North Eastern Railway. Built at Darlington and Gateshead Works between 1886 and 1894, the class was the NER's standard goods 0-6-0 for over half a century, continuing in LNER and BR service until 1962. One example, 65033, has survived in preservation at the Tanfield Railway.
Worsdell was the NER's locomotive superintendent from 1885 and standardised the company's goods 0-6-0 designs on the J21 pattern. The class was widely allocated across the NER and (later) LNER North Eastern Region, with major sheds including Darlington, Gateshead, Newcastle, Sunderland, Tyne Dock, Hull Dairycoates, Stockton, and York. They worked goods and pick-up freight across the North Eastern coalfields and the Yorkshire and Northumbrian rural lines.
Joy valve gear was unusual for British 0-6-0 designs but Worsdell used it on the J21, hidden between the frames so the engine had a clean, functional appearance from the side. The class was the NER's workhorse for over half a century, surviving through three different ownership eras (NER, LNER, BR). Withdrawals began in the 1950s and the last in regular service was withdrawn in 1962.
The preserved 65033 (originally NER 876, then LNER 5033) was built at Gateshead Works in 1889 and spent its working life on Northern Region pick-up freight and branch services. After withdrawal in 1962 it was preserved by the Stephenson Locomotive Society and is currently based at the Tanfield Railway. It is the only surviving NER goods 0-6-0 in any form.
Design and development
Wilson Worsdell was the NER's locomotive superintendent from 1885 and his predecessor Edward Fletcher had built the original NER 0-6-0 designs. Worsdell standardised these on his J21 design from 1886, with around 201 engines built at Darlington and Gateshead between 1886 and 1894. The class was the NER's standard goods 0-6-0 for over half a century.
Service and withdrawals
The J21s spent their entire working lives on NER and (later) LNER North Eastern Region freight and pick-up services. They were a familiar sight at every major NER goods yard from Darlington to Hull. Withdrawals began in the 1950s and the last in regular service was withdrawn in 1962.

NER 64 to 1813 series with various sub-batches between 1886 and 1894. LNER 5000 to 5200 series from 1923, classified J21. British Railways from 1948 added 60000 to give 65000 to 65200 for the survivors.
Notable locomotives
65033 (originally NER 876, then LNER 5033) is the surviving J21. Built at Gateshead Works in 1889, it spent its working life on Northern Region pick-up freight and branch services. After withdrawal in 1962 it was preserved by the Stephenson Locomotive Society and is currently based at the Tanfield Railway, where it has been a regular performer in heritage railway service. It is the only surviving NER goods 0-6-0 in any form.

Livery history
The class was outshopped from new in NER plain black with NER white-lined cabsides. The LNER painted them in plain black with the LNER company crest. British Railways from 1948 painted the class in plain unlined black with the early lion-and-wheel emblem. The preserved 65033 has been kept in NER plain black throughout its preservation career.
