LMS Fowler Class 4F

The class's origin lies with the Midland Railway. By 1910 the MR needed a modern heavy goods 0-6-0 to replace older Victorian goods designs. Henry Fowler, the MR's Locomotive Superintendent, designed a 0-6-0 tender goods engine with two inside cylinders, 5 ft 3 in driving wheels, and a 170 psi boiler. The first engine entered service in 1911.

Production continued under the MR through to 1922, with substantial further production by the LMS from 1924 onwards. The class's ubiquity made it the universal LMS goods workhorse from the 1920s through to dieselisation. Production continued at the LMS works (Crewe, Derby, Horwich) and contracted private builders (the North British Locomotive Company, Vulcan Foundry, others) through to 1941, by which time the total production had reached 772 engines.

The 4F was the LMS's and BR LMR's universal heavy goods 0-6-0 from 1911 onwards. The class worked freight services across the entire LMS system, particularly on the Midland Main Line and Midlands-area cross-country goods. By the late 1950s the LMS Black Fives and BR Standard 5MTs were progressively replacing the 4Fs on the heavier duties; lighter engines such as the BR Standard 4MTs and 2MTs took over the lighter goods. The last 4Fs in BR service were withdrawn in 1965.

The classic late-Victorian / Edwardian goods 0-6-0 outline, a design pattern shared with many other British goods 0-6-0s of the period. Inside cylinders, brass dome on the boiler, modest cab. The class was unnamed.

MR/LMS era (1911–1947): the class was distributed across virtually every LMS goods shed. Major allocations on the Midland Main Line goods (Saltley, Toton, Wellingborough, Holbeck), the Cumbrian and Scottish goods routes, and the Welsh and West Country goods.

BR era (1948–1965): continued at the same sheds. Withdrawals through the late 1950s and 1960s as Stanier and BR Standard 5MT/4MT/2MT engines progressively replaced the older 4Fs.

Midland Railway / LMS plain black (1911–1947): the class was outshopped in plain MR/LMS black with shaded lettering, the standard goods livery.

British Railways unlined black (1948–1965): from 1948 the class wore BR-standard unlined black with the early lion-and-wheel emblem (later the late BR crest from 1956).

Preservation: preserved 4Fs have appeared in MR/LMS plain black, BR unlined black, and (occasionally) experimental MR-period liveries.
