Tyseley Locomotive Works (Vintage Trains)

Tyseley Locomotive Works is a working steam locomotive depot in Birmingham, occupying part of the former GWR Tyseley engine shed (originally opened 1908). The Works is one of the principal heavy-overhaul facilities for main-line registered steam locomotives in Britain, operated by Vintage Trains, and forms the operating base for several of the most active main-line preserved locomotives.

The site was acquired in 1968 by Patrick Whitehouse (railway author, broadcaster, and one of the leaders of British post-war railway preservation) as a base for his private collection of GWR Castle Class locomotives, principally 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 7029 Clun Castle. Over the following decades the depot grew into a major heavy-overhaul works and the operational base for Vintage Trains, the company that runs main-line steam excursions from Birmingham.

The Works is open to visitors on selected days for "Open Weekends" and the regular Shakespeare Express tourist train operates from Birmingham Snow Hill in summer.

History

The original Tyseley engine shed opened in 1908 as a GWR depot serving the Wolverhampton main line and Birmingham suburban services. After the end of steam in 1966, the depot was closed by BR; Patrick Whitehouse and Pat Garland acquired part of the site in 1968 to keep their preserved Castles running. The site has grown progressively into a major heavy-overhaul facility, now operated by Vintage Trains plc, a unique TOC-licensed operation that runs main-line steam excursions under its own train operating company licence.

Original line history

The original GWR Tyseley shed (1908) was one of the principal Birmingham locomotive depots, serving the Wolverhampton main line. It survived through the BR Western Region era until end of steam in 1966.

Stations and infrastructure

The Works occupies part of the original GWR Tyseley shed complex, with workshops, machine shop, paint shop, and yard storage. The adjacent Tyseley Network Rail station provides direct access. The Works is exceptionally rare in being a fully operational main-line connected steam workshop with engineering capability for major overhauls.
