The BR Class 05 was a series of 69 diesel-mechanical 0-6-0 shunting locomotives built by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds between 1955 and 1961 for British Railways, providing a light yard shunter of proven industrial pedigree for BR's smaller goods yards and depot pilot duties. Hunslet was one of Britain's foremost industrial locomotive builders, and the Class 05 brought the firm's accumulated expertise in compact diesel-mechanical shunter design into the BR standard fleet, with a 204 bhp Gardner 8L3 engine and Hunslet's well-tried mechanical transmission giving reliable and economical light shunting performance across the many smaller locations where the heavier Class 08 diesel-electric was impractical.

The Class 05's Hunslet heritage was evident in its robust construction and straightforward mechanical layout — the Leeds firm had been building reliable industrial shunters for collieries, ironworks, and dock railways since the 1860s, and the Class 05 brought this industrial reliability into the BR fleet alongside the concurrent BR-built Class 03 and the Drewry Class 04. Like those classes, the Class 05 used mechanical rather than electric transmission, keeping weight and complexity lower than the Class 08 at the cost of a lower maximum tractive effort and speed.

BR withdrew the Class 05 progressively from 1968 as freight rationalisation reduced the need for light shunters at smaller yards, and the last examples left BR service in the early 1980s. Many found industrial second lives at collieries, steelworks, and docks. One example, D2554, is preserved on a heritage railway.
