South African Railways Class 25NC 4-8-4
The South African Railways Class 25NC is a 4-8-4 Northern-type heavy passenger and mixed-traffic locomotive of 3 ft 6 in Cape gauge, designed under SAR mechanical engineer L. C. Grubb. The class entered service in 1953 and was the non-condensing version of the famous condensing Class 25, which used giant tenders fitted with condensing apparatus for use across the dry Karoo.
Of the 137 engines built, half were supplied by Henschel of Kassel in Germany and the other half by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. Most worked main-line passenger and freight in South Africa until steam was wound down. A handful have survived into preservation, including 3405 "Janice" at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, repatriated to Britain in 1991.
