3405 "Janice", South African Railways Class 25NC 4-8-4

A South African Railways Class 25NC 4-8-4 on static display at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton. One of the largest preserved locomotives in the United Kingdom.

3405 was built in Glasgow by the North British Locomotive Company in 1953 as works number 27291, half of the 137-engine 25NC order (the other half coming from Henschel of Germany). It worked SAR main-line service in South Africa until steam was wound down, and was repatriated to Quainton in 1991 by the North British Locomotive Preservation Group.

The engine is 3 ft 6 in Cape gauge and so cannot operate on the Centre's standard-gauge demonstration line; it is held as a static exhibit and carries the name "Janice".
