60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, LNER A4 Class

A preserved LNER A4 Class streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific, built at Doncaster Works in 1937. Withdrawn from British Railways service in February 1966 and preserved — one of only six A4 Pacifics to survive.

60007 Sir Nigel Gresley was the 100th Gresley Pacific built, named after its designer Sir Nigel Gresley himself — an honour accorded while Gresley was still CME of the LNER. Holds the post-war world steam speed record of 112 mph, achieved on Stoke Bank in May 1959 with a full passenger train — a record set after the locomotive had been preserved as part of the national fleet, making it a unique achievement for a 'pre-preserved' locomotive. In 2013 she was among the six surviving A4s reunited at the National Railway Museum for the Great Gathering. Owned by the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust and based at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, she has operated extensively on both heritage railway and main-line excursion work.
