60019 Bittern, LNER A4 Class

A preserved LNER A4 Class streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific, built at Doncaster Works in 1937. Withdrawn from British Railways service in 1966 and privately preserved.

60019 Bittern is notable as the only surviving A4 with its original corridor tender — the purpose-built tender with a through passage allowing crew changes on the non-stop Flying Scotsman London–Edinburgh runs. In 2013, during high-speed commemorative runs marking the 75th anniversary of Mallard's record, she achieved 93 mph — the highest authenticated speed by a steam locomotive in preservation. She was among the six surviving A4s reunited at the National Railway Museum for the Great Gathering in 2013. Owned by Icons of Steam (Jeremy Hosking) and currently undergoing overhaul.

Last recorded as under overhaul (moving from Margate to North Yorkshire), owned by Icons of Steam (Jeremy Hosking). Operating status: Under restoration.

Location, livery and operating status last confirmed pre-2024 and subject to change. Check with the owning organisation or heritage railway for current information.
