Balbuthie Railway and Farming Museum
A private railway and farming museum in the East Neuk of Fife, built by John Cameron to give a permanent home to the two LNER locomotives he owns. Unlike the heritage railways elsewhere in this section, Balbuthie has no running line: the locomotives are displayed statically alongside an agricultural collection.
History
John Cameron, a Fife farmer and former president of NFU Scotland, spent many years seeking a permanent home for the two LNER locomotives he owns, A4 60009 Union of South Africa and K4 61994 The Great Marquess. Earlier proposals for a visitor centre at Balbuthie met planning difficulties, and consent was at one stage granted for a farm visitor centre without the locomotives. The scheme was eventually realised through the Cameron Railway Trust, and purpose-built accommodation was completed at Balbuthie Farm. 60009 moved there in 2023 on withdrawal from main-line service, joining 61994, and the museum opened to the public combining the railway collection with displays on farming and food production.
Visitor information
Balbuthie Farm lies near Kilconquhar in the East Neuk of Fife, inland from Elie and Earlsferry. Opening is seasonal and limited; intending visitors should check current arrangements before travelling.
