The BR Class 04 was a series of 142 diesel-mechanical 0-6-0 shunting locomotives built between 1952 and 1962, ordered by British Railways from the Drewry Car Co. of London (with mechanical parts manufactured by Vulcan Foundry of Newton-le-Willows) as light yard shunters for the newly nationalised railway. The Class 04 used a Gardner diesel engine and mechanical transmission similar in concept to the concurrent Class 03, providing an economical and manoeuvrable light shunter for smaller yards and depot pilot duties across the BR network. Like the Class 03, the mechanical transmission's lighter weight and simpler maintenance compared with the electric transmission of the Class 08 made the Class 04 suitable for locations where the heavier electric-transmission shunters were impractical.

The Drewry Car Co. was not itself a locomotive manufacturer but a design and ordering house that placed construction contracts with established manufacturers — in this case Vulcan Foundry — to produce locomotives to its specifications. This commercial arrangement was common in the early British diesel era, when several design bureaux and trading companies acted as intermediaries between railway operators and manufacturing works. The Class 04 was effectively a Drewry design built by Vulcan, and the locomotives were broadly similar in purpose and capability to the BR-built Class 03 that entered service slightly later.

BR withdrew the Class 04 from 1967 as traffic patterns changed, and many examples were sold to industrial operators. Three examples are preserved: D2298, D2310, and D2334.
