The Welsh Highland Railway Beyer Peacock Garratt K1 is the prototype Garratt articulated locomotive — see the main WHR NGG16 Garratt entry for full details of the Garratt type on the Welsh Highland Railway. The K1 is the first-ever Garratt locomotive built, constructed by Beyer Peacock of Manchester in 1909 for the Tasmanian Government Railways and subsequently preserved. It is now on the Welsh Highland Railway, representing the origin of the Garratt articulated locomotive concept that was later developed into the NGG16 class that works the WHR today. One example, K1, is preserved.
