Planet (replica)

Notable history

A working reproduction of the 1830 Planet, built by the Friends of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and completed in 1992. The original was built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1830 as the Liverpool and Manchester Railway's engine No. 9.

The replica follows the original design as closely as modern materials and safety rules allow, and was built largely in the museum's Great Western Warehouse using traditional techniques where possible, though it has a welded steel fire-tube boiler and injector feed. It first moved under its own steam on 2 October 1992 and went on to haul replica 1830 carriages on the museum's demonstration line. It is now displayed in the Power Hall.
