Weardale Railway
The Weardale Railway is a standard-gauge railway in County Durham, running 18 miles up the Weardale valley from Bishop Auckland through Wolsingham, Frosterley and Stanhope. The line is a substantial former North Eastern Railway branch, originally engineered for heavy mineral traffic from the lead and limestone workings of the upper dale.
The railway has had a complicated post-preservation history. After closure to BR passenger services in 1953 and to all traffic in 1993, it has been reopened, run intermittently as a community heritage operation, and changed hands more than once. As of recent years, the line has been operating very limited services and undergoing restoration; visitors should consult the railway's current status before travelling.
History
After freight closure in 1993, the Weardale Railways Trust acquired the line and reopened a section in 2004 with limited heritage services. The line has subsequently passed through multiple operators and ownership structures, and operations have been intermittent. Restoration of trackbed, signalling and locomotives is ongoing under the current operating body.
Original line history
The line was opened by the North Eastern Railway in stages from the 1840s, primarily for the carriage of lead, limestone and cement from the upper Weardale industries. Passenger services to Stanhope ended in 1953, but cement traffic from Eastgate kept the upper end of the line open until 1993, when the cement works closed and the line lost its principal traffic.
Stations and infrastructure
Stanhope retains its NER station building and is the principal heritage terminus. Wolsingham and Frosterley are intermediate stations, and Bishop Auckland West sits adjacent to the National Network station of the same name.
