72010 Hengist, BR Standard Class 6 (Clan) (new build)

A new-build BR Standard Class 6 Clan Pacific 4-6-2 — the first of its class ever to be built, as no original Clan class locomotive survived into preservation: all ten were withdrawn and scrapped between 1962 and 1966. Construction as No. 72010 Hengist continues the original Clan class numbering sequence at its logical next position.

The Standard Clan project follows the new-build pattern established by Tornado and The Unknown Warrior, funded by public subscription through the 72010 Hengist Locomotive Trust. The Clan class was a lighter, smaller-boilered variant of the Britannia class intended for Scottish and other routes with weight restrictions, and a new-build example will fill the only significant gap in the preserved BR Standard fleet. Construction is currently in progress.
