Peak Rail
Peak Rail is a 4-mile standard-gauge heritage railway in the Derbyshire Peak District, running between Matlock and Rowsley South via Darley Dale. The line occupies the southern end of the former Midland Railway main line from London to Manchester via the Peak, one of the most scenically dramatic main-line closures of the British Rail era when the route was abandoned in 1968 in favour of the rival West Coast Main Line.
Peak Rail was formed in 1975 and the first preserved trains ran in 1991, although the long-term ambition (to reopen a substantial portion of the former main line as far as Bakewell) has remained a stated aspiration. At Matlock the heritage line shares a platform with East Midlands Railway services from Derby, providing direct national-network connection.
History
Peak Rail was formed in 1975 with the broad ambition of restoring the former Midland main line through the Peak. After many years of trackbed acquisition and fundraising, the first preserved trains ran from Matlock to Darley Dale in 1991, with the extension to Rowsley South following in 1997. Long-term aspirations to extend further north towards Bakewell remain.
Original line history
The line was the southern end of the Midland Railway main line from London to Manchester via the Peak, completed in 1867. The route was a major Anglo-Scottish trunk for the Midland and its LMS successor. After Beeching, the through route was identified for closure as duplicating the West Coast Main Line; passenger services were withdrawn in 1968.
