re-davey-paxman

The Davey, Paxman & Co. miniature locomotive at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is River Esk, a 2-8-2 Mikado-type 15 in gauge steam locomotive built in 1923 by Davey Paxman of Colchester — one of the largest and most powerful of the R&E's steam fleet, capable of hauling the longest and heaviest passenger trains on the seven-mile 15 in gauge route through the Eskdale valley in the Lake District. The Mikado wheel arrangement (2-8-2) was unusual for 15 in gauge practice and gave River Esk exceptional haulage capability on the demanding gradients of the Cumbrian fells.
