STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway

STEAM, Museum of the Great Western Railway is the principal museum dedicated to Brunel's Great Western Railway, occupying part of the original Swindon Works in Wiltshire. The museum tells the story of the GWR from its 1835 incorporation through the Brunel period, the Churchward and Collett locomotive eras, and the Swindon Works' role as one of the largest railway engineering complexes in the world.

The museum opened in 2000 in the converted GWR Boiler Shop and Iron Foundry, after the Works closed in 1986. Displays include several of the most significant GWR locomotives, recreated workshop scenes, the works office, and an extensive social-history collection telling the story of the Swindon railway community. The site is part of the larger McArthurGlen Designer Outlet retail and heritage development that has reused the historic Works buildings.

History

STEAM opened in 2000, fourteen years after the closure of Swindon Works. The museum is operated by Swindon Borough Council and occupies the converted Boiler Shop and Iron Foundry, substantial Grade II listed buildings dating from the 1840s. The collection includes material acquired from the GWR/BR Western Region over many decades, much of it formerly held at the Great Western Railway Museum (which previously occupied the Methodist Chapel on Faringdon Road).

Original line history

Swindon Works was established by the GWR in 1841 at the recommendation of Daniel Gooch, on land acquired from the Goddard family. The Works expanded to become one of the largest railway engineering establishments in the world, employing 14,000 people at its peak and building locomotives, carriages, and wagons for the GWR and the British Railways Western Region. Production wound down in the post-Beeching era, with the Works closing in 1986.

Stations and infrastructure

The museum occupies the converted Boiler Shop and Iron Foundry of the former Swindon Works. Adjacent buildings now house the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, the National Trust's Swindon office, and offices.
