The Talyllyn Railway Fletcher, Jennings & Co. locomotives are the railway's two original 1865 locomotives — No. 1 Talyllyn and No. 2 Dolgoch — built by Fletcher, Jennings & Co. of Whitehaven for the opening of the Talyllyn Railway in 1865 and continuously operated on the 2 ft 3 in narrow-gauge line through the Fathew valley in mid-Wales ever since, making them the oldest locomotives in the world to have worked continuously on the same railway throughout their lives. When the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society took over the moribund railway in 1951 — making the TR the world's first preserved railway — both Talyllyn and Dolgoch were in various states of disrepair but were subsequently restored to working order and continue to operate on the railway they have served for 160 years.
Design and development
The Talyllyn Railway opened in 1865 in mid-Wales (2 ft 3 in gauge). The railway's two original locomotives were supplied by Fletcher, Jennings & Co. of Whitehaven — small 0-4-0ST engines (later modified) for the line's gentle gradient.
Service and withdrawals
"Talyllyn" (No. 1) and "Dolgoch" (No. 2) have worked the Talyllyn continuously since 1865 — making them the world's oldest narrow-gauge steam locomotives still in regular passenger service. After the 1951 preservation of the railway (the first preserved railway in the world), both engines were progressively rebuilt and remain operational in 2026 — over 160 years' service.
