48773, LMS Stanier 8F (Severn Valley Railway)
A preserved LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotive, built by the North British Locomotive Company at Glasgow in 1940 as War Department No. WD 307. Withdrawn from British Railways service in August 1968 and preserved in 1969 by the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society.
48773 was built as a War Department engine and served overseas during the Second World War — one of hundreds of Sir William Stanier's 8F design requisitioned for military service across multiple theatres including the Middle East and Italy. The 8F was adopted as the standard British wartime heavy freight locomotive, built by multiple manufacturers under government contract. 48773 represents the class's wartime overseas service. Now on static display at the Severn Valley Railway.
Last recorded as based at the Severn Valley Railway, owned by the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society. Operating status: Static display. Current livery: BR unlined black.
Location, livery and operating status last confirmed pre-2024 and subject to change. Check with the owning organisation or heritage railway for current information.
Notable history
Built by the North British Locomotive Company at Glasgow in 1940 as WD 307 (the third War Department-numbered 8F), the engine was sent to Persia (Iran) in 1941 for the Trans-Iranian Railway supply route to the Soviet Union. Repatriated in 1948, the engine gave twenty further years of BR service before being withdrawn from Rose Grove (Burnley) in August 1968, the very last 8F in BR service and among the very last steam locomotives in regular British Railways service.
Additional notes
The LMS Stanier 8F was the standard British heavy freight engine of WWII and its aftermath; 48773 represents the class's wartime overseas service uniquely in preservation.
