The North British Railway K Class 'Glen' (LNER D34) was a series of 32 inside-cylinder 4-4-0 express passenger locomotives designed by William Paton Reid and built between 1913 and 1920, named after Scottish glens — Glen Douglas, Glen Falloch, Glen Moy, Glen Orchy, and others — and specifically designed for the demanding West Highland Line from Glasgow Queen Street to Fort William and Mallaig, one of the most scenic and challenging main-line railways in Britain. The West Highland's severe gradients and sharp curves through the mountains of the Scottish Highlands required a locomotive with good adhesion, adequate power, and the ability to handle the tight curvature of the route, and the Glen class 4-4-0 met these requirements admirably.

The Glen class represented the final flowering of the inside-cylinder 4-4-0 express type on the North British Railway, and the locomotives gave long and reliable service on the West Highland and other NBR routes until replaced by LNER Gresley and Thompson types in the 1930s and 1940s. The preserved example, No. 256 Glen Douglas, is one of the most evocative of all Scottish preserved locomotives, its NBR olive green livery and the romantic name recalling the West Highland Line's landscape of dark lochs and steep-sided glens that made it one of the most celebrated railway journeys in the world.
