The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway Kerr Stuart locomotive is No. 14 Joan, a narrow-gauge 0-6-2T built by Kerr, Stuart & Co. of Stoke-on-Trent originally for the Antigua Sugar Factory in the West Indies, subsequently repatriated and acquired by the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway where it gives the 2 ft 6 in gauge heritage line an unusual international dimension alongside the W&LLR's British-built originals and other acquisitions. Joan's history on an Antigua sugar plantation before coming to mid-Wales is a reminder of the global reach of British narrow-gauge industrial locomotive builders, whose locomotives worked sugar, coffee, and mineral railways across the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia as well as the slate quarries and collieries of Britain.
