hunslet-quarry
The Hunslet quarry locomotives are the celebrated narrow-gauge 0-4-0 saddle-tank engines built by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds for the North Wales slate quarry railways — principally the Dinorwic Quarry at Llanberis and the Penrhyn Quarry at Bethesda — where these small, powerful, and highly manoeuvrable saddle-tank locomotives hauled slate wagons through the terraced galleries and inclines of the great Snowdonian slate quarries from the 1870s through to the eventual closure of the quarries in the mid-twentieth century. The Hunslet quarry type became synonymous with North Wales slate quarrying and is one of the most characteristically Welsh of all preserved locomotive types.
The Dinorwic Quarry in particular developed a large and well-documented fleet of Hunslet 0-4-0STs of varying sizes and vintages, many of which have survived into preservation thanks to the extraordinary conditions of the quarry: the slate galleries and underground workings preserved the locomotives from weather and corrosion to a degree unusual for industrial working engines, and the quarry's closure in 1969 left a large number of locomotives in a state suitable for preservation. Many of the Dinorwic locomotives were acquired by the Llanberis Lake Railway and the Bala Lake Railway, where they continue to haul passenger trains through the mountains of Snowdonia on the very gauge for which they were built.
Eight distinct Hunslet quarry locomotives are preserved across several heritage railways, including Elidir, Holy War, Alice, Dolbadarn, Maid Marian, Winifred, Thomas Bach, and Wild Aster.
Design and development
Hunslet Engine Co. developed the quarry saddle-tank type from the 1870s specifically for North Wales narrow-gauge quarry operation, building successive variants for the Dinorwic and Penrhyn quarries. The Dinorwic closure (1969) left a large surviving fleet; many were acquired by heritage railways operating on the same 1 ft 10¾ in gauge.
