Swanage Railway

The Swanage Railway is a 6-mile standard-gauge heritage railway on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, running between Swanage on the coast, through the spectacularly photogenic Corfe Castle station (under the ruins of the medieval castle), to Norden Park & Ride. The line is the surviving Swanage branch of the former LSWR / Southern Railway, closed in 1972.

The Swanage Railway Society was formed in 1972 immediately after closure, and after lengthy fundraising and trackbed acquisition the first preserved trains ran in 1979. The 2002 reconnection at Norden, and the 2017 trial of through trains from Wareham (Network Rail) to Swanage, were major operational milestones, though regular Wareham–Swanage services have not yet been established as a permanent feature.

The line's combination of coastal scenery, the Corfe Castle setting, and the heath of the Isle of Purbeck has made it one of the most-photographed heritage railways in Britain.

History

The Swanage Railway Society was formed in 1972 immediately after closure, with the long-term aim of reopening the entire branch to Wareham. The first preserved trains ran from Swanage to Herston Halt in 1979, with progressive extensions through Harman's Cross (1989) and Corfe Castle (1995) to Norden Park & Ride (2002). The connection at Norden re-established the link to the Network Rail at Wareham. In 2017 a trial three-month period of regular through trains from Wareham operated, demonstrating viability though not yet leading to a permanent through service.

Original line history

The Swanage branch was opened in 1885 as a LSWR line from Wareham to serve the rapidly growing Victorian seaside resort of Swanage and the ball-clay industry of the Isle of Purbeck. It was always a busy summer-traffic branch, with through London expresses summer Saturdays. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1972.

Stations and infrastructure

Swanage is the eastern terminus, with the original 1885 LSWR station building. Corfe Castle is the most famous intermediate station, with the medieval castle ruins as backdrop. Norden is the western terminus, with park-and-ride and connection to the Network Rail line. Herston Halt is a small intermediate stop.

Visitor information

Norden Park & Ride is signposted from the A351 Wareham–Swanage road. Connection to the Network Rail at Wareham (South Western Railway services from London Waterloo) is maintained via the Wareham–Swanage road; a regular through-train service is the long-term aspiration.
