GWR 2361 Class

The GWR Dean Goods (Class 2361, originally 2301) was one of the most famous goods locomotive classes in British railway history: 280 inside-cylinder 0-6-0 tender locomotives designed by William Dean and built at Swindon Works between 1883 and 1899, which served the Great Western Railway, saw military service in both World Wars, and were still being withdrawn from active duty as late as 1957 — giving the earliest examples a service life of over seventy years.

Dean designed the class as a reliable, conservative standard goods engine, deliberately prioritising a proven working design over innovation. Inside cylinders, 5 ft 2 in coupled driving wheels, and a straightforward parallel boiler made the Dean Goods practical to build and cheap to maintain at the GWR's many depots. This conservatism proved the class's great virtue: when the War Department requisitioned 62 locomotives for service in France during the First World War, and another 108 for service in the Middle East and North Africa in the Second, the Dean Goods' simple, rugged construction proved ideal for improvised military railway working in difficult conditions.

After the Second World War, survivors returned to GWR and then BR service. The last examples were withdrawn in 1957. One, 2516, is preserved at the STEAM Museum in Swindon — in the very town where it was built, a fitting home for a class that more than any other embodies the Victorian GWR's practical engineering philosophy.
