Northampton & Lamport Railway

The Northampton and Lamport Railway is a standard-gauge heritage railway in Northamptonshire, running through the gently rolling ironstone countryside between Pitsford and Brampton and Boughton Crossing on the former LNWR Northampton to Market Harborough secondary line — a cross-country route that served the Northamptonshire communities between the WCML at Northampton and the Midland Main Line at Market Harborough before its closure in 1981.

The Northampton Steam Railway was formed immediately on closure in 1981, an early and determined response that secured the trackbed and infrastructure before deterioration could set in. The first preserved trains ran in 1995 and the railway has built steadily since, with long-term plans to extend the operational section in both directions along the original alignment. The Northamptonshire countryside setting — the same ironstone landscape of red-brown fields and stone-built villages that runs north through Leicestershire to the East Midlands — gives the NLR a pleasantly understated rural character.

The railway's collection includes steam and diesel locomotives representative of the Midland and LMS traditions appropriate to the line's history, and the station at Pitsford and Brampton has been carefully restored to represent a typical LNWR country station. The NLR works closely with the nearby Nene Valley Railway in the broader Northamptonshire heritage railway community.

History

The Northampton Steam Railway was formed in 1981 immediately after the closure of the LNWR Northampton–Market Harborough line. After more than a decade of trackbed acquisition and station rebuilding, the first preserved trains operated in 1995. The line has remained a small but committed operation, with long-term aspirations to extend.

Original line history

The line was part of the LNWR cross-country route from Northampton to Market Harborough, opened in 1859. It was always a secondary route, taken over by the LMS at Grouping. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1960 with freight continuing until 1981.

Stations and infrastructure

Pitsford & Brampton is the headquarters and operating base, with engine shed and workshops. Boughton Crossing is currently the southern limit of operations.
