4709, GWR 4700 Class (new build)
A preserved gwr 4700 class locomotive.
Last recorded as based at Didcot Railway Centre, owned by 4709 Steam Locomotive Trust. Operating status: Under construction / restoration. Current livery: GWR Middle Chrome Green.

New build, but largely from Barry survivors. The Great Western Society’s 4709 Group assembled it from components of several genuine locomotives: the frame extension and six of the eight driving wheels from 5101 Class 4115, the boiler from Castle Class 7027 Thornbury Castle, and axleboxes, horns and other parts from 5205 Class 5227. New frame plates were cut in 2012, and new cylinders were cast in place of the 2800 Class 2861 cylinder block originally intended, to clear the modern loading gauge. No original 4700 survived.
