L&YR Class 27
The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Class 27 was a series of inside-cylinder 0-6-0 goods tender locomotives designed by George Hughes, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the L&YR from 1904 to 1922, built from 1910 for the railway's heavy goods and mineral traffic across the industrial network of Lancashire and the West Riding. Hughes introduced several improvements over the earlier Aspinall and Barton Wright goods classes, including higher boiler pressure and detail refinements that gave better performance on the intensive goods working of the L&YR's congested industrial network.
The L&YR's goods traffic in the Edwardian era was characterised by the movement of coal from the Yorkshire coalfields to the Lancashire textile towns and the export ports at Liverpool and Hull, and by the reverse traffic of raw cotton and finished goods. The Class 27 0-6-0 provided the freight haulage capacity for this busy commercial operation, working on routes shared with the intensive passenger services that competed for paths on the L&YR's constrained main lines.
The Class 27s gave useful service under the L&YR and subsequently the LMS, which found them adequate for the secondary freight duties of the former-L&YR network. None was preserved.
Design and development
Hughes designed the Class 27 at Horwich Works in 1909–10 as a development of the L&YR's standard goods 0-6-0, incorporating higher boiler pressure and detail refinements for the railway's intensive industrial freight.
Service and withdrawals
Worked L&YR goods services from 1910. LMS ownership after 1923; withdrawn in the 1930s–40s. None preserved.
