Notable history

Ordered on 22 January 1974 under lot 30876, part of the first production batch of High Speed Train power cars built for the Paddington to Bristol and South Wales services, and released from Crewe Works on 21 August 1976.

It carried Exeter nameplates from 1994 until its conversion to MTU power, and in April 2010 was renamed for the Institution of Railway Operators. After a long spell stored at Ely it was acquired by the 125 Group on 1 May 2023, paid for by a donation from one of the group's own members.
