70013 Oliver Cromwell, BR Standard Class 7
A preserved BR Standard Class 7 Britannia 4-6-2 Pacific, built at Crewe Works in May 1951. Withdrawn from British Railways service on 11 August 1968 — the last day of BR main-line steam — and preserved directly into the National Collection.
70013 Oliver Cromwell worked the central section of the Fifteen Guinea Special on 11 August 1968, the last official BR steam-hauled passenger train. Selected for the National Collection in preference to class prototype 70000 Britannia on grounds of better post-overhaul condition. On 12 August 1968 — the day after the steam ban took effect — she ran under her own power from Manchester to her former home depot at Norwich, then to Diss, before road transport to Bressingham Steam and Gardens in Norfolk. She was the last steam locomotive to move under her own power on the national main line for many years. Kept at Bressingham providing footplate rides through the 1970s and 1980s, then restored to full main-line standard in 2008 for the 40th anniversary of BR steam's end. Now at the Great Central Railway under overhaul.
Last recorded as based at the Great Central Railway, owned by the National Railway Museum. Operating status: Under restoration. Current livery: BR Brunswick green.
Location, livery and operating status last confirmed pre-2024 and subject to change. Check with the owning organisation or heritage railway for current information.
