The Great North of Scotland Railway D Class (LNER D40) was a series of 21 inside-cylinder 4-4-0 express passenger locomotives built for the Great North of Scotland Railway between 1899 and 1921 as the company's standard express type for its routes through Aberdeenshire and the North-East of Scotland. The GNoSR was one of the smallest of the pre-Grouping Scottish railways but served a large and economically important agricultural and fishing region of north-east Scotland, operating principal services between Aberdeen and the coastal towns, whisky-producing Speyside valleys, and the fishing ports of Buchan and the Moray Firth coast.

The D Class was built in several batches under successive GNoSR locomotive superintendents, with later examples incorporating superheating and other improvements that gave them notably better performance than the original saturated-boiler versions. The LNER designated the class D40 after the 1923 Grouping and continued operating the locomotives on their former GNoSR routes, which became the LNER's Scottish area secondary main lines. The D40s gave long and reliable service on North-East Scottish express and secondary passenger duties, their inside-cylinder 4-4-0 configuration well suited to the moderate gradients and speeds of the Aberdeenshire and Banffshire routes.

One example, No. 49 Gordon Highlander, is preserved at the Riverside Museum, Glasgow, in Great North of Scotland Railway livery and representing the GNoSR's express locomotive tradition.
