45000, LMS Stanier Black Five (class prototype)

A preserved LMS Stanier Black Five 4-6-0, built in 1934 as the class prototype — the very first Black Five produced, making it numerically and chronologically the founding member of one of the most successful British locomotive designs of the twentieth century, with 842 examples eventually built. Preserved as part of the National Collection.

45000 is on static display at the National Railway Museum, York, representing the class as its original example alongside the many other members of the class that worked to the very end of BR steam.
