Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway
The Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway is a 15 in gauge miniature railway running approximately 2 miles along the seafront at Cleethorpes in north-east Lincolnshire, one of the longest-established seaside miniature railways in Britain and a fixture of the Cleethorpes seafront since 1948. The line runs between Lakeside station alongside Cleethorpes Boating Lake and Kingsway station near the pier, with intermediate halts at Suggitts Lane and North Sea Lane.
The CCLR was established in 1948 as a straightforward seafront pleasure railway, typical of the seaside miniature lines that were a feature of British coastal resorts from the Edwardian era through the post-war holiday boom. Over more than seventy years it has developed from a short pier-side novelty into a substantial heritage operation with a varied fleet of steam and diesel miniature locomotives — including some unusual one-off home-built engines that give the collection a distinctive character. The line operates an unusually extensive year-round service by British miniature railway standards, reflecting the railway's role as a permanent feature of Cleethorpes seaside life rather than a purely summer seasonal attraction.
Cleethorpes is the principal seaside resort of Lincolnshire and the Humber estuary, and the railway runs along the seafront promenade with views across the Humber towards Hull. The railway's location in the East Midlands and Lincolnshire makes it one of the few 15 in gauge miniature operations accessible to visitors from the Midlands and South Yorkshire who might otherwise have to travel to Norfolk or the south coast for a comparable miniature railway experience.
History
The line was founded in 1948 as a short seaside attraction near the Pier, and has been progressively extended along the seafront over the decades. A major rebuilding in the 1990s gave the railway its current double-track section near Lakeside, larger station facilities, and the workshop where its more unusual locomotives have been built.
Original line history
The Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway was established as a passenger-carrying pleasure railway at Cleethorpes seafront in Lincolnshire, initially as a 15 in gauge line along the North Promenade opened in 1948. The railway was built specifically to carry holiday visitors along the seafront rather than to preserve a previous industrial or main-line operation, placing it in the tradition of seaside miniature railways that were a feature of British coastal resorts from the Edwardian era. The line has operated at Cleethorpes through successive ownerships and has developed its locomotive collection and infrastructure over the decades, establishing itself as a permanent feature of the Cleethorpes seafront visitor offer alongside the beach and amusement facilities.
Stations and infrastructure
Lakeside is the principal station and headquarters, with the workshops, signal box and main locomotive shed. Kingsway serves the Pier end of the seafront, with intermediate halts at Old Station and Beachlands.
