63601, GCR 8K / LNER O4 2-8-0
A preserved GCR 8K Class / LNER O4 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotive, built by Gorton Works in 1911 to J. G. Robinson's design — the first successful British 2-8-0 heavy freight type and the ancestor of the BR Standard 9F. The GCR 8K was adopted by the War Department during the First World War as the standard British military heavy freight locomotive, with hundreds built by multiple contractors for service on the Western Front and other theatres. Preserved at the Great Central Railway, the locomotive's home line.
63601 is preserved at the Great Central Railway — the preserved section of the original Great Central Railway main line for which Robinson designed the 8K class. An appropriate home for the design that established the heavy mineral 2-8-0 as the standard British wartime freight locomotive and whose descendants served in both World Wars.
