class-06-barclay
The BR Class 06 was a series of 35 diesel-mechanical 0-4-0 shunting locomotives built by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co. of Kilmarnock between 1958 and 1960 for British Railways, representing the smallest of the BR standard diesel shunter classes and designed specifically for the very light shunting duties of small yards, docks, and terminal sidings where the four-coupled 0-4-0 wheel arrangement — with its very short wheelbase and tight curve radius — could negotiate locations that the longer six-coupled shunters could not reach. Andrew Barclay's long experience in industrial 0-4-0 shunter design for the dock and colliery market made the Kilmarnock firm the natural choice for this specialised requirement.
The 0-4-0 wheel arrangement — just four coupled wheels and no leading or trailing axles — gives the Class 06 the minimum possible wheelbase and the tightest curve negotiation of any BR standard shunter. This made the class valuable at locations with very tight curve radii: quayside tracks, dock installations, small industrial sidings, and terminal yards where the standard-length six-coupled shunters were simply too long to manoeuvre. The Gardner diesel engine and Barclay mechanical transmission gave reliable shunting performance in this compact package.
BR withdrew the Class 06 progressively from 1969 as the dock and small-yard traffic it was designed for declined, and the last examples were withdrawn by 1981. One example, D2420, is preserved on a heritage railway.
Design and development
Andrew Barclay designed the Class 06 at Kilmarnock in 1957–58 as BR's lightest standard diesel shunter, using the 0-4-0 wheel arrangement for maximum curve negotiation. 35 were built 1958–60. The short wheelbase made them uniquely suited to dock quayside and tight-curve industrial shunting.
Service and withdrawals
Class 06 worked BR dock and light shunting from 1958. Withdrawn 1969–81. D2420 preserved.
Identification features
0-4-0 diesel-mechanical shunter, Gardner 8L3 engine, 153 hp.
Notable locomotives
- Several preserved on heritage railways
