British Railways (LM Region)
About
The London Midland Region (LMR) of British Railways was a territorial Region from 1 January 1948 until 1992. It inherited the LMS's English mileage, broadly the West Coast Main Line from Euston to Carlisle, the Midland Main Line, and the lines through North Wales to Holyhead.
The Region was the principal beneficiary of the West Coast Main Line 25 kV ac electrification of 1959–1974, the first complete British 25 kV ac main-line electrification, bringing successive new electric locomotive classes (Class 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86 and 87) and the Class 310 and 311 EMUs.
The Region was sectorised in the 1980s, InterCity West Coast, Network SouthEast and Regional Railways inheriting its principal services. The geographic Region was formally abolished in 1992 and at privatisation its services passed to multiple TOCs including Virgin West Coast, Silverlink and Central Trains.
