Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. (BRCW)
About
The Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) was a major British carriage, wagon and (latterly) locomotive builder at Smethwick on the western edge of Birmingham. Founded in 1854 from earlier carriage-building firms, BRCW supplied carriages to most British railways and exported widely.
From the 1950s BRCW expanded into BR diesel-electric main-line locomotive construction. The firm built the BR Class 26 (47 built 1958–1959) for BR Scottish Region, the Class 27 (69 built 1961–1962) for the same Region, and the Class 33 (98 built 1960–1962) for BR Southern Region.
BRCW went into voluntary liquidation in October 1963, partly as a result of BR's withdrawal of new orders following the disastrous BR Class 17 'Clayton' double-cab experience that had affected diesel-electric procurement strategy. The Smethwick works closed soon afterwards.
