The BR Class 27 was a series of 69 Bo-Bo diesel-electric mixed-traffic locomotives built by Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. between 1961 and 1962 using an uprated Sulzer 6LDA28-B engine producing 1,250 bhp, representing the Birmingham RC&W development of the Class 26 in the same way that the Class 25 was Derby's development of the Class 24 — see the main BR Class 27 entry for full details. Like the Class 26, the Class 27 was allocated primarily to the Scottish Region where it gave long and reliable mixed-traffic service until withdrawal in the 1980s. Six examples are preserved.
