Alstom (Washwood Heath)
About
'Alstom (Washwood Heath)' refers to Alstom's ownership of the former Metro-Cammell carriage works at Washwood Heath, Birmingham, from 1999 until its closure in August 2005. Alstom inherited the works from GEC-Alsthom (which had acquired Metro-Cammell in 1989) and continued production of carriages and EMU body shells for British and overseas customers.
Among the products built at Washwood Heath in this period were elements of the Class 390 'Pendolino' tilting train for Virgin West Coast (with the bogies and electrical equipment supplied from Alstom Italy and Alstom France) and various export EMUs. The works closed on 26 August 2005, ending almost 175 years of continuous railway carriage building in Birmingham.
