Adtranz Derby

ADtranz Derby refers to the Derby Litchurch Lane Carriage Works during its ownership by ADtranz (ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation, subsequently renamed DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems) from 1 January 1996 until acquisition by Bombardier Transportation on 1 May 2001. The works had passed to ADtranz from ABB Transportation, which had itself purchased it from British Rail Engineering Limited in 1989 as part of BREL's privatisation — making the site's ownership history a microcosm of the broader international consolidation of European railway manufacturing in the 1990s.

The Litchurch Lane works, established by the Midland Railway in 1876, had been the primary British carriage manufacturing site through the BREL era, building the Mark 2, Mark 3, and Mark 4 coaching stock as well as successive generations of electric and diesel multiple units. Under ADtranz the works continued producing rolling stock for the newly privatised British railway market, with principal products including Class 220 and 221 Voyager DMU bodies for Virgin CrossCountry, contributions to the Class 390 Pendolino tilting train body shells, and various Networker family variants.

The Litchurch Lane works passed to Bombardier Transportation following Bombardier's acquisition of ADtranz in May 2001, becoming Bombardier Derby. In 2021, following Alstom's acquisition of Bombardier Transportation's rail division, the works became Alstom Derby — the single most important remaining railway manufacturing facility in Britain, building the Class 345 Aventra fleet for the Elizabeth Line and maintaining its position as the UK's principal rolling stock manufacturing centre on the same Derby site where the Midland Railway had been building carriages since 1876.
