South West Trains

South West Trains was the Train Operating Company that held the South Western franchise from 4 February 1996 — the first franchise let in the privatisation of British Railways — until August 2017, operated throughout by Stagecoach Group through three successive franchise renewals. The franchise covered the services from London Waterloo to the south-western suburbs, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Salisbury, Exeter, and Reading — the full extent of the former LSWR and Southern Region territory west of London — making SWT one of the largest TOCs by passenger volume in the privatised network.

South West Trains inherited from Network SouthEast a mixed fleet of aging suburban EMUs and the excellent Class 442 'Wessex Electric' for the Bournemouth and Weymouth services. Its principal rolling stock investment was the Siemens Desiro family — Class 444 five-car units for the Bournemouth main line and Class 450 four-car units for the dense suburban network — which between 2003 and 2007 replaced most of the inherited NSE fleet with modern, air-conditioned stock. The franchise's twenty-one-year run was one of the longest in the privatisation era, passing to the FirstGroup-MTR consortium as South Western Railway in August 2017.

About

South West Trains (SWT) was a British Train Operating Company that held the South Western franchise from 4 February 1996, the first franchise let in the privatisation of British Rail, until 19 August 2017. It was operated throughout by Stagecoach Group, which won three successive renewals of the franchise.

SWT operated services from London Waterloo to the south-western suburbs (Wimbledon, Kingston, Twickenham), and on to Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Salisbury, Exeter and Reading. The franchise inherited the third-rail electrified suburban network from BR's Southern Region and the Class 442 'Wessex Electric' fleet from Network SouthEast.

SWT's principal new rolling stock was the Class 444 Desiro and Class 450 Desiro EMUs (Siemens, 2003–2007), introduced for the Bournemouth and suburban services respectively. The franchise passed to South Western Railway (a FirstGroup/MTR consortium) on 20 August 2017.
