British Railways (Channel Tunnel freight)

About

'British Railways (Channel Tunnel freight)' refers to the Channel Tunnel freight operations of British Railways from the opening of the Tunnel on 6 May 1994 until BR's privatisation in 1997. Through-freight services between Britain and Continental Europe began in summer 1994, using the new dual-voltage Class 92 electric locomotives.

The Class 92 was procured jointly by BR, SNCF (France) and CFL (Luxembourg) for Channel Tunnel through freight working between Britain's 25 kV ac and 750 V dc third-rail systems and the French SNCF 25 kV ac network. At privatisation the Channel Tunnel freight business passed to EWS (formerly Loadhaul, Mainline and TransRail).
