Mid-Suffolk Light Railway

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway is a short heritage railway and museum at Brockford & Wetheringsett, near Stowmarket in Suffolk. It is built on a section of the trackbed of the original Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, an obscure rural light railway opened in 1904 under the 1896 Light Railways Act and closed in 1952, which only ever ran from Haughley Junction to Laxfield (just over half of its planned route through to Halesworth was never built).

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Preservation Society was formed in 1991 and opened the present site at Brockford in 1992. The site recreates a typical light-railway country station and includes a substantial museum dedicated to the original line. The operating section is short, about a quarter of a mile, but is operated as authentically as possible, with appropriate small tank engines and short trains.

History

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Preservation Society was formed in 1991 with the modest but specific aim of recreating something of the atmosphere of the original Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. The Brockford site was acquired and developed from 1991 onwards.

Original line history

The original Mid-Suffolk Light Railway was incorporated under the Light Railways Act 1896 to build a line from Haughley Junction to Halesworth, with a Westerfield branch. Construction began in 1900 but only the Haughley–Laxfield section opened (1904 for goods, 1908 for passengers). The railway was always financially marginal, the eastern extensions were never built, and the line closed completely in 1952, making it one of the earliest British branch closures.

Stations and infrastructure

The site recreates a typical light-railway country station with a wooden station building, signal box, and engine shed, all built or rebuilt to match Mid-Suffolk Light Railway practice.
